STROLL ALONG KRALJA PETRA STREET IN BELGRADE

The best way to get to know the city is to take long walks. This time, we are strolling along Kralja Petra Street which holds all the history and heritage of the capital.

The street was planned to connect Sava and Dunav rivers since the time of the Romans in the 1st century AD. It was bustling and busy even then. The Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarchy and the city’s St. Michael’s Cathedral were founded along the same street, and so were the Jewish Municipality and Islamic community.

The interesting thing about this street is that one can see traces of Baroque, Secession, Art Deco, Modernism, or Orientalism architectural styles along a single kilometer. This is where the first Belgrade pharmacy was opened, the first bookstore, and hotel; this was the main trade center; the first basketball game was played at Kralj Petar School which was designed by the first female architect.

Since Serbian tradition is closely related to kafanas, you should end your walk at the oldest Belgrade tavern called “?” and have local noodles with plums – in the same street.
