FIND ART NOUVEAU IN SERBIA

If you always admired the building with green tiles in Kralja Petra Street in Belgrade, the Iron Man Palace in Novi Sad, or Subotica's Sinagoge, it might be the time to go exploring Serbian architecture this June on the 10th, the official Art Nouveau Day.

The architectural style that came to life in the 19th-century Europe as an artistic rebellion against the old conservative forms gave birth to a style that you can find in Serbia as well. The three cities we mentioned above hold examples adorned with natural ornaments, decorative details, and iron fences.

Lots of private houses and public institutions sprung up at the beginning of the 20th century with details a curious observer can easily notice. The Art Nouveau examples can be found in Belgrade's and Novi Sad's central areas even though Subotica was under the strongest influence of the Vienna-style version. Just take a look at the local Raihle's Palace. What a mixture of interesting colors and lines!

Did you know that Art Nouveau had different names depending on the country it was developed in? What Austria recognizes as the Vienna Secession, is known as Jugend in Germany, Art Nouveau in France and Belgium while the English called it Liberty and Italians the Floral Style.
