Sightseeing for participants of HIGH LEVEL COMMEMORATIVE MEETING TO MARK THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT

A tour of Belgrade, the capital of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the cities of Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci, has been arranged for the attendees of the meeting marking the 60th anniversary of the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Countries in Belgrade (1961).

1. CITY TOUR OF BELGRADE

This programme includes:


-Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park – an ancient fortress and a park, overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, witnessing the complex and interesting history not only of the city of Belgrade, but of the entire region.

-Knez Mihailova street –a pedestrian street built according to the first urban plan of Belgrade from 1867, an example of the architecture from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century when Belgrade transformed into a European city.

-Museum of Yugoslavia – tells the story of a country during one of the most intensive periods of its history, when the whole world was fascinated and impressed, with a special exhibition entitled "Prometheus of the New Century" dedicated to the Non-Aligned Movement.

-St. Sava Temple - the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans, with more than 15,000 square meters covered with mosaic, dominating the city panorama due to its unique position.

Leaving the right bank of the Sava river and driving through New Belgrade, which was built as a new city after WW II, reaching the ancient fortress, today Kalemegdan Park, where the history of Belgrade started in the 3rd century BC. A visit to Kalemegdan Park

After the tour of Kalemegdan, we will walk the pedestrian street to find our bus again at Students’ square and to continue the tour driving past the National Museum and National Theater, located on the Republic square. Our tour will take you to Terazije square - the heart of the city with the iconic hotel ‘’Moscow’’ built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Parliament of Serbia and Kneza Milosa street to reach the residential part of Belgrade, Dedinje, where many embassies and residencies are located. A visit to Museum of Yugoslavia and the exhibition “Prometheus of the New Century”. Continuing to St Sava Temple – located on the highest point of the city of Belgrade.

After visiting the temple, we will drive back to the starting point, past the old railway station and the monument to Stefan Nemanja, the father of the medieval kingdom of Serbia, and the Belgrade Waterfront, a new modern neighborhood on the right bank of the Sava river.

At the very crossing from New Belgrade to the old part of the city in 1961, an obelisk, a four-sided pillar narrowing towards the top, was erected in 1961 and dedicated to the Non-Aligned Movement first conference held that year.

2. THE HISTORICAL STAGES OF BELGRADE

This programme includes:

-Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park – an ancient fortress and a park, overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, witnessing the complex and interesting history not only of the city of Belgrade, but of the entire region.

-Museum of Yugoslavia – tells the story of a country during one of the most intensive periods of its history, when the whole world was fascinated and impressed, with a special exhibition "Prometheus of the New Century" dedicated to the Non-Aligned Movement

-The Royal Compound built by King Alexander of Yugoslavia for his family, telling us the story of the turbulent times before, during and after WW II

-The Parliament built as the Parliament of Yugoslavia, witness to our recent history. In this building leaders of 25 countries attending the First Nonaligned Countries Conference held in Belgrade gathered 60 years ago.

Driving by the Belgrade Waterfront, and passing by the Old railway station and the monument to Stefan Nemanja, the father of the medieval kingdom of Serbia, to reach the ancient fortress, today Kalemegdan Park where the history of Belgrade started in the 3rd century BC.

After the walking tour of Kalemegdan Park, continue with a panoramic tour of New Belgrade, to reach the Museum of Yugoslavia for a visit.

From the Museum of Yugoslavia continue to the Royal Compound, built on the then outskirts of Belgrade as a home for the King`s family.

After visiting this exceptional complex, drive to downtown Belgrade for the visit to the Parliament of Serbia, a unique witness of all the historical events in our Capital.

3. NOVI SAD AND SREMSKI KARLOVCI

This programme includes:

-A ride through the Province of Vojvodina, part of the Pannonian plain, to reach the city of Novi Sad.

-A walking and panoramic tour of Novi Sad, with a view of the Petrovaradin fortress.

-A walking tour of Sremski Karlovci

-Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia, once the cultural capital for all the Serbs. This beautiful multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city will be the European Capital of Culture in 2022.

-We will walk through the Danube Park and the Danube street, the oldest street of Novi Sad, passing by the main orthodox church of the city dedicated to St George, and by the Cathedral dedicated to the name of the Holy Virgin, and see the beautiful main square of Novi Sad where the City Hall is facing the Cathedral.

-We will continue by bus to visit the town of Sremski Karlovci, historical city where the Karlovac Peace Agreement was sign in 1699 between Ottoman and Holly Roman Empire. This event happened in the Chapel of the Peace which was built specially for this occasion, on the top of the hill.

-Today, this beautiful city is famous for the production of wine and honey, as well as its incredible atmosphere and architecture.
-After visiting Sremski Karlovci, we will drive back to Belgrade.

4. BELGRADE MUSEUMS 

This programme includes:

Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park – an ancient fortress and a park, overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, witnessing the complex and interesting history not only of the city of Belgrade, but of the entire region.

The National Museum is the most significant Serbian museum. It exhibits some of the most valuable archaeological, artistic and numismatic artifacts from Serbia, but also from other parts of Europe and the world. The National Museum’s permanent exhibition is chronologically comprehensive, aesthetically appealing, nicely organized and easily understandable to the visitors.

The Nikola Tesla Museum is a scientific and cultural institution which is unique in Serbia and the world. It was the first technical museum in Yugoslavia and it gives visitors the opportunity to see models built accurately according to Tesla’s drawings, as well as personal belongings and original documents of the world-famous scientist.
