Street food places in Serbia have always been a favorite stop for many on the way back from a night out.
Three festivals are held in honour of burgers.
In Serbia’s city of Novi Sad, you must try the famous index sandwich, which was created about forty years ago on campus. A soft and warm crescent roll hides ham, fried mushrooms and soft, stretchy cheese. If you go south, you will see that there is nothing better than a barbecue and juicy burgers wrapped in a bun and filled with various side dishes, while in Belgrade, the once-famous Loki and Mara have now been replaced by various creative street food ventures – from fresh Adriatic fish in a sandwich and original bao buns with shrimp, sticky chicken or pulled pork, to local flavours such as a bun soaked in pork and lamb sauce and various urban street food culture delicacies, with burgers being dominant. Three festivals are held in honour of burgers: the Belgrade Burger Festival is a ten-day event that gathers the most important local and international masters of burger culture; Los Silos, a small local festival backed by the pioneers of burger culture in the capital, Burger House Bros; and finally Burgeraj, a burger festival on the banks of the Sava River.
Street food in Serbia is getting better and better, the offer is increasingly diverse and there are more and more new places where you can try classic, authentic and also unusual dishes. The street food concept is so widespread that it has its own week in September, Street Food Week, and there are more and more events that celebrate the culture of street food in some way and they are very popular, such as the Belgrade Night Marketin the capital and other similar city fairs where small producers present their products.
