Mysterious fortress on the Danube

All the peoples who have lived in this area named Golubac after the word for pigeon in their languages.

The expanse of 7 kilometres, which is how wide the Danube is here, will give the impression that you are at sea, not on a river. If you want to see the beauty of Golubac and the Golubac Fortress from the water, the experience will be unique and unmatched. Our largest river is at its widest in its entire course from the Black Forest to the Black Sea in one of the smallest places in Serbia with only about 1,500 inhabitants.

There are plenty of medieval legends, mysteries and stories about fairies in this area, and one of the guides in his small boat that circles the Golubac Fortress every day tells tourists that all nations, from the Roman period until today, have always named Golubac after the pigeon.

Did you know that when the Turkish Pasha punished a princess for adultery with a young man from the neighbouring village by imprisoning her in the dungeon in the Hat Tower (one of the 9 fortress towers), which no one was allowed to enter, the only company she had were pigeons? Even today, they nest nearby.

The magnificent Golubac Fortress on a cliff on all four sides will not only inspire you with its fascinating stories from its rich and somewhat mysterious history and give you some great photos for the social networks. You will also be able to take a break in the green areas or take a walk along the 1,800-metre-long path to the nearby viewpoint.

While you tour the renovated fortress and its towers with a guide or on your own, you will find out why the Serbs, Hungarians and Turks rebuilt the so-called stone guard of the Đerdap gorge, each in their own time, why the border of the Roman Empire was here and what secrets are kept by tower number 8 about one of the greatest heroes of the Middle Ages century in Europe, the knight of Zawisca the Black?

Since Golubac has always been considered an extremely desirable place to live, during your stay here you should live the way the locals do: try white fish and perch from the Danube in the restaurant, take a walk along the quay, on foot or on a bicycle, and soak up the enormous energy of our largest river.
