Kale fortress is located within the city centre of Pirot. It had strategic importance in the defence against the Turkish invasion because the Constantinople road, the main commercial and military route, passed through that area.
The Pirot Fortress is a small military fortification, strengthened by towers and consisting of two units – the Upper and the Lower Town. The Upper Town was built on a high rock where a donjon-tower was erected, with a view of a wide Pirot area. A brick moat and strong ramparts with towers surrounded the Lower Town.
The reconstructed fortress is now open to visitors and is a new place for cultural experiences.
