A decade of creative madness: craft beer in Serbia

Creamy texture, long, persistent foam, primary bitter citrus aromas with a light fruity finish: yes, beer is now described as if it were wine! Craft brewers are responsible for that. They gave a whole layer of finesse to a drink that we generally perceive as simple. A unique, original aroma, production in small batches and using the highest quality ingredients: this is craft beer, an urban phenomenon that has conquered our country over the last ten years. The first craft breweries in Serbia appeared around 2013, and these are some of the brands that conquered the market in the meantime: Kabinet, Salto, Dogma, Docker, Gvint, Tron, Crow, etc. Regardless of the stylistic differences, all these breweries share a highly creative approach to work, with constant adherence to global trends.

Among craft beer lovers, lagers are also increasingly popular and excellent companions for food and warm summer days.

In Serbia, as at the beginning of the craft revolution, IPA (India Pale Ale) beers dominate, a distinctly American style full of aromatic hops with citrus notes. Among craft beer lovers, lagers are also increasingly popular and excellent companions for food and warm summer days. Beer lovers in Serbia do not shy away from extremely daring experiments, and sour beers made with different fruits are a major hit this year with their incredible combinations of aromas.

Pairing food and beer is a “discipline” that is still in its infancy here, although most beer lovers will not look beyond the usual combinations of beer and chicken wings, sausages, onion rings and other classic beer specialities. For those who want more than beer, highly spicy Asian food or well-chilled characteristic lagers are recommended, and to carefully choose the type of beer to match the toppings on the pizza: wheat beer goes with lots of cheese, hot sausage with amber ale, and seafood pizza with light IPA beer with lots of citrus. The combinations are unlimited, just like wine.
