Art and wine (exhibitions and artworks)

Often, artists become winemakers.

In the world of art, wine is more than a drink, it’s a source of inspiration. The fusion of wine and art is not a momentary affair, it’s a subtle, elusive, continuous dialogue. The roads become the paths of art where sips of wine become poetry, vines grow into colour palettes and each cluster of grapes reveals a new tale.

From the brilliant painting “The Winemaker” (1842) by the Serbian painter Katarina Ivanović, which is kept at the National Museum in Belgrade, all the way to the contemporary exhibitions where wine and art are interwoven, this unbreakable connection between the two takes us into magical worlds of unforgettable flavours, colours and experiences. Often, artists become winemakers. One example is Kosta Botunjac from Župa, whose white wine Botunjac Jagoda is a true synthesis of visual art and the art of winemaking.

All works exhibited there are inspired by grapes, wine and the processes in which this magical beverage is made.

The exhibition “Art and wine” has been held for 10 years as part of the Šumadija Wine Fest at The Winemaker’s House on the Oplenac hill in the town of Topola. There, influential artists of all generations and sensibilities gather. All works exhibited there are inspired by grapes, wine and the processes in which this magical beverage is made.

City Wine Salon brings together winemakers from Serbia, the region and Europe, with the idea of promoting wine as a unique space of creativity. The artist Mira Kovačević, who paints with wine, has distinguished herself at this event. The forgotten technique called winerelle reveals the beauty of wine and radiates the spirit of vine. This delicate art tells the tale of wine and gives off the rich aromas, while also exploring the symbolism and the spirit of wine. Mira Kovačević creates pieces that evoke the sensuality of wine, entwining its colour, texture and elegance on the canvas.

Nevertheless, what we see on the canvas is merely a facet of the artist’s interpretation, while the wine itself remains mysterious and awaits each next opening of a bottle to reveal a new chapter in the tale of art and wine.
